Schools have an important role in promoting sport through the co-curricular programmes they offer students. These programmes allow students to build on and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they develop in the school’s physical education curriculum. Organised school sports programmes should neither be seen as substitutes for sport studies in this curriculum nor as the specific domain of physical education teachers.

The effective promotion and organisation of school sport should reflect the needs of students and ensure that all students have the opportunity to:

  • participate to the highest level of their interest and ability
  • experience enjoyment and achievement
  • become competent and enthusiastic participants
  • practise fair play (in the widest interpretation of the term) in all situations

Integral to our P.E and Health programme at Wairau Intermediate is the goal that our students develop healthy bodies and healthy minds.

Sport provides opportunities for our students to develop creativity and positive attitudes towards physical activity.

We offer a wide range of sporting opportunities where all students are encouraged to participate. Students develop the fundamental movement skills alongside those that are essential for playing as a team. We value the life skills of enjoyment, competition, commitment and resilience.

Sports Camp

Team sports are open to all students who are keen to get involved. Playing as part of a team provides a fantastic opportunity to stay active, develop new skills, and build friendships. Students trial and, if successful, are placed into a team with students of a similar skill level.

Our current sports teams include:

  • Basketball
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Water Polo

Teams play weekly games against other intermediate schools across the North Shore, and usually also hold weekly training sessions. To secure a place in a sports team, fees must be paid before the season begins.

Please note that some team numbers are limited due to competition league entry restrictions.

Students are notified about signing up, trial days and team selection via the Daily Notices or the teacher in charge.

Zone Day competitions provide students with the opportunity to represent the school in the North Harbour inter-school tournament programme, with each competition taking place during the school day.

Students are typically invited to attend trials for these competitions. Students who are selected will pay a small one-off fee to participate and will usually attend several training sessions at school in the lead-up to the tournament.

Students are notified about signing up, trial days and team selection via the Daily Notices or the teacher in charge.

Held at a purpose-built venue where accommodation, meals, and activities are all provided on-site, the camp offers a safe and supportive environment in which students can challenge themselves, develop new skills, and enjoy being part of a team.
